What is survodutide?
Survodutide (BI 456906) is an investigational peptide that activates two receptors — the glucagon receptor and the GLP-1 receptor (a “dual agonist”). This combined mechanism is studied for effects on energy expenditure and appetite (le Roux et al., 2024).
What the clinical research examined
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 2 dose-finding trial in 387 adults with obesity (without diabetes), once-weekly survodutide over 46 weeks produced dose-dependent weight reductions — up to about 14.9% at the highest dose versus 2.8% with placebo. Adverse events were primarily gastrointestinal (le Roux et al., 2024).
The limits and important context
- Survodutide is investigational: studied in clinical trials but not an approved medicine; long-term safety and outcomes are still being established.
- The trial data come from a supervised clinical setting and do not translate to unsupervised use. This material is for laboratory research use only.
